Nathan Haskell Dole letter to Dear sir and poem, 1894-1895.

The collection consists of two items: letter from Dole to Dear sir [Mr. ? Danton], 8 April 1894, explaining that he has been too busy to comply with his request, but will do so now, with signed five-line poem on verso; also, signed poem, April 1895, closing with the sentiment, "By heaven alone is the heart satisfied."

Nathan Haskell Dole was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, and educated at Harvard University. He worked as a teacher and journalist in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and California, and as advisor and editor for the publishing firms Crowell and Appleton. He also wrote poetry, and was a prolific translator of Russian works into English, including Tolstoy's works and numerous songs and lyrical pieces.
